Ancient Towers of Andros

Agios Petros tower

An important monument in the village of Ag. Petros is the Tower. It is an imposing and magnificent tower, standing in the middle of the hillside near the village of Gavrio. It is cylinder-shaped , 20 m. in height , while its diameter is 9,40 m.

The tower is made of schist rock and it's dated from the 4th-3th century B.C. Historical evidence shows that it was constructed mainly to protect the workers in the rich mines around it, but also to protect the area's ores. However , it is perfectly clear that it also worked as a fort to defend the inhabitants from the enemies' and pirates' invasions.

Another version says that the tower used to send messages by transmitting light signals with firewoods. In the internal part of the tower , over the door, once there was a sort of balcony that worked as a bastion , on which the tower warriors used to battle. Its round base, 21m. in circumference, is one with the tower's main body and is distinguished by its bigger volume and the technique of its structure.

Nowadays, the base's dome has collapsed as well as the upper part of the tower. However, a part of its spiral stone staircase, that led to five other floors in the past , is still preserved.
