VENETIAN CASTLE IN CHORA
It was built in 1207 and all the building work lasted for 26 years. You can see it just at the end of the peninsula of Hora - Andros town opposite the square of "the Unknown sailor".
The little island on which the imposing Venetian castle is built , is connected by Hora with a little stony arch.
The castle used to be a fort to protect Hora in the past. However , its greater part was destroyed during the second world war.
THE CASTLE IN THE VILLAGE OF KOCHILOU
It was called the "Pano Castro".It was the biggest and most powerful medieval town of Andros and was built by the Venetians (when Marinos Dandolos was in power on the island froma 1207 until 1233) on an imposing plateau north of Korthion overlooking the valley below at a height of about 600 metres.
Surrounded by steep cliffs and a strong wall it was extremelly well fortified and had a population of about one thousand inhabitants.
Inside the castle is the byzatine church of Panagia Phaneromeni which celebrates the 15th of August.
To go to the castle you'd better come to Kochilou village, take then the road underneath the hill where the castle stands and finally come up the 143 steps to reach the entrance.
